Sewing Machine For Sale

Sewing Machine Part Missing?

I found a really nice sewing machine for sale at a consignment shop close by but there is a piece missing off of it and I don't know if I can buy it from the dealer. It is the metal cover going over the bobbin. I am new to sewing and was wondering what this piece is called and would it be possible for me to buy just this piece once I know what its called?

  1. It depends on the Manufacturer and the year and model That sounds like the bobbin case and they can be purchased separately but only for new machines. Do not buy that machine. Instead by a used machine from a local dealer that comes with a warranty and lessons.
  2. I believe that the piece you need is the throat plate. This is a specially shaped, flat metal cover through which the needle passes while the machine is in use. A throat plate is shaped to expose the feed dogs and keep the shuttle race and bobbin casing free of dust and lint. A throat plate can be removed for specialty work, cleaning, and oiling and they ARE replaceable in modern machines. If you know the make and model of your machine, contact the manufacturer and ask if the throat plate for that particular machine is available. While you're at it, see if you can get the manual, too. Having the manual will make all the difference, especially if you are new to sewing.
