  1. Don't buy "kiddie machines" -- they don't sew well and just wind up frustrating everyone. Buy a simple, probably used, machine instead. My standard sermon on beginner sewing machines: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ag3yL7LGTDXkn2_KTlDmQlLty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20091112123016AAGFvXW&show=7#profile-info-RBPs2V7Zaa Just for the record, I was not quite 6 when I started sewing on a standard electric sewing machine. Still haven't put a needle through my finger.
  2. Just get one that does straight stiches and zig-zag. I learned on my Grandma's pedal machine and was delighted to have an electric one. http://www.shopwiki.com/_Singer+1507+8-Stitch+Sewing+Machine?o=1036074323&s=3885& http://www.walmart.com/Sewpro-Quikstitch-Sewing-Machine-Sp402/ip/5006454
  3. Walmarts has a sewing machine for beginners, it has simple set up and DVD instructions. I think it was less then $100. plus there is neat projects on youtube. Also if you have a GoodWill near you, they have sewing machines sometimes, you can request them to call you first if one comes in. I am just glad that young ones can still be interested.
