What are they type of sewing machines that will automatically sew a design for you?
I am wanting to know what type of machines will sew either a design or a name onto a cushion or such like and if there are any that are affordable? Help would be much appreciated!

- If you have enough cash anything is affordable. Visit a sewing machine shop and ask for a demo. Machines that are programmable to do designs are far from cheap!
- They are called programmable. They are not cheap if you purchase a good one.
- These are embroidery machines. There are two types of embroidery machines on the market, ones that do only embroidery, and ones that combine embroidery with the functions of a regular utility sewing machine. There are also machines where you can insert USB drives or special memory cards programmed with embroidery designs, some allow you to connect to your computer and design and digitize your own designs. Each of these features adds to the price of the machines. They are not cheap, but if you plan on doing lots of embroidery projects they can be worth the investment. Most machine with embroidery capabilities are considered top of the line premium machines. Pfaff produces some of the finest top of the line machines and their embroidery machines are virtually limitless, you can use pre-programmed designs or design your own. They have the largest hoop on the market. Here's Pfaff's website, look around, there are many embroidery models to choose from. Babylock produces both embroidery/utility sewing machines and dedicated embroidery machines. Babylock makes some very high quality machines in many different price points: Here's the intro page for their embroidery machines: http://www.babylock.com/embroidery/ Janome is another sewing machine line that produces both types of embroidery machines. They are also an excellent brand and they produce several good embroidery only machines: http://www.janome.com/index.cfm/Machines/Embroidery Singer is a tough one. their top of the line machines aren't bad, just be certian to buy from an authorized singer dealer listed on the website, don't buy from anywhere that isn't an authorized dealer such as e-bay or a department store such as walmart. You need the dealer backing you up with a singer. http://www.singerco.com/products/ And that's the basics of embroidery machines. Check out the websites and also check out the sewing machine user reviews on patternreview.com http://sewing.patternreview.com/
- You are looking for an embroidery machine. Embroidery machines have many built-in designs and fonts. Some are embroidery only and some are combination sewing and embroidery. They start at about $400. With this one - http://www.amazon.com/Brother-SE350-Computerized-Embroidery-and-Sewing-Machine/dp/B001AQER4I you will also need to purchase a reader/writer unit and re-writable memory card. PED Basic is shown in the ad and it includes the card. The more features, the more expensive the machine will be. Ideally you would want an embroidery machine that has a stitching area larger than 4 x 4 - this in indicated by hoop size. Another feature would be USB connectivity for sending designs from the PC (downloaded from the Internet) to the embroidery machine. This can be direct connect (cable comes with the embroidery machine and connects to your PC, which needs to be withing 2 feet of the embroidery machine) or a flash drive/stick. The latter is the most convenient as it stores a large number of designs and the PC does not have to be anywhere near the embroidery machine. This model - http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp15330.html has the larger stitching area (5 x 7) and the USB cable and USB stick. Brother is the leader in embroidery machines. I started with the less expensive embroidery only Brother from Walmart and it stitched out beautiful designs, but I was limited to the 4 x 4 area. I now have a Babylock with the USB features and the larger stitching area. It is a combo and sews and embroiders beautifully.
