What is the best brand of sewing machine to buy?

I want to buy sewing for a family member. I think they would prefer one that s not very high tech. But I would like to buy them one of good quality. Any suggestions or links?

1. I bought a Singer 7442 about a year ago. It has a digital button function, but other than that is not high tech. It is extremely easy to use, I've been sewing for more than 10 years, but someone that is new to sewing could use it very easily. It has about 18 stitch functions so I can use it for pretty much all my sewing. I was very surprised at how nice the machine was for less than 200 dollars. It was an excellent investment. Another really good brand is Brother. Both of these brands have been around for years, so you would be happy with either and they won't cost you a ton of money.
2. It would depend on how much you want to pay. My domestic machine is an Elna and its an excellent machine. Another fab machine is the Bernina. My friend, who used to run a sewing machine shop, really rates the Janome, which is a cheaper end of the market machine. It would be advisable for you to buy one from a proper shop if poss rather than somewhere like Argos. That way if anything goes wrong you have somewhere to go for advice. My machines are industrial and they are all Brother they are all brilliant machines but I have no experience of the domestic ones. Just avoid JSM machines who have a website shop they are disasterous! Good luck.
3. It all depends on how much money you want to spend. I have several sewing machines. I have a $4000.00 Bernina, a very old Singer, a White, and a Brother. They all work very well for what I need them to do. It also depends on what the intended user will use it for. If they are going to quilt or do some heavy duty sewing, I would suggest a Brother or Singer. You get a lot for the money. You can get them at WalMart and any good fabric store. Good luck
