HELP! I need to buy a sewing machine that does monogram as well.?
I am looking to monogram some of my childs shirts, and I don't know which sewing machine to buy. All of the ones that do monorgam seem to be $500.....is there anything cheaper (I'm a beginner and I can't fathom spending that kind of money when I haven't even tried it before). Please help :)

You will probably bring up more search results with the sewing machine search. Once you have experienced all that you can do with the machine you will understand why they cost so much. But, there are some more affordable ones out there! Happy Hunting and embroidering!
- Machines that do embroidery tend to be expensive. I swear by Viking machines...but, you might want to look at White, Singer also...they sometimes come with advanced features and are more price concious...Sears Kenmore line might also be an option. E-bay is a good place to look but, remember sewing machines can be heavy and so costs of shipping can be big. Have you looked at your local thrift store or sew n vac. There are still some sewing machine repiar (usually repairs sewing machines and vacuums) shops out there that might have an older model sewing machine that works well, may have embroidery functions and come at a cheaper price.
- To help put into perspective the costs of sewing machines try to compare a sewing machine to a car. Would you expect a $100 car to work as well or do as much as a $500 car? It's kind of the same thing. Machines (new) that do monograms will be expensive. You won't be able to get around that. $500 for a machine that can do a monogram sounds like a bargain to me. The good news is that people do trade up for machines with more capabilities and the type of machine you are looking for is something that has resale value...so you may find it at a seewing machine dealership. They should back up any machine you purchase from them. If $500 is too much for you, it will be difficult to find one. Be patient and check around for used machines and you may get lucky. The Brother NX 250 is a machine that I know of that is around the $500 mark. It is excellent for beginners, it is easy to learn and easy to use and has lots of extra features, including 3 alphabets. I know $500 is overwhelming but if you can find a 'used" NX 250 or NX 450...you would probably be in the right ballpark. (But not too many people trade them in...) http://www.brother-usa.com/HomeSewing/ProductList.aspx?cat=sewing Best of luck! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Additional Thought... If you only want to do monograms, there is a Brother 180D that does embroidery only. It has embroidery designs built in and it includes Alphabets. If you don't need it for sewing and only want to do monograms, a used machine like this could be in your price range.
- I bought the Brother Disney E300. It does monograms, disney pictures, AND other pictures as well. It takes a memory card, so you can download designs from your computer. Brother has free designs, which I thought was really neat. Monogramming is definitely an expensive proposition, so try eBay, and other websites for the machines. Embroidery machines are definitely not cheap!!
