  1. As a beginner I would really go to a sewing machine dealer and get a machine. they will have used ones that will be cheaper to buy. You will get free lessons on how to use your machine and they will always be there to help you with it in the future. for jeans, there is this little plastic thing that goes under you sewing that help you sew over the big seams of jeans. wonderful for sewing jeans. jean a ma jig
  2. Look for a good quality basic machine. I have a basic Kenmore ( less than $200.). I use it mainly for piecing quilts and repairing clothes including jeans. It does an excellent job and makes more stitches than I'll ever need. You need to go back & forth, a simple Zigzag and a button-holer. A few decorative stitches are nice but you don't need multiple needles and dozens of fancy stitches. They make learning more difficult and increase your odds of getting frustrated and giving up. I find the more feature you have, the more there is to break! You will use different needles for different jobs.

  4. I suggest to anyone in the market for a sewing machine to visit as many sewing machine dealers as possible. Tell the dealer what you want to be able to sew with the machine (especially hemming jeans) and they will help you choose a model that is right for you. They will show you how to use the machine and let you test run it. Dealers have lessons and classes, if you are interested. If you have questions or need help with the machine, the dealer will be able to help you - not so when you buy from a big box store. Try as many different brands and models as you can and then buy the machine you like best from the dealer you like best.
