  1. Brother, White, Euro Pro, and Singer are all good machines. On the high end, Pfaff, Bernina and Husqvarna are all good. Kenmore is good, but Sears/Kmart is very bad with customer service and they will pester you endlessly to buy the service agreement. Get a live person to show you how to use the machine. You can go it alone, but it will mess up A LOT. Have fun browsing the pattern books at your local fabric store. The pattern envelopes will have the supply list and instructions. It's best to have a live person to show you what to do with the pattern. Get on the mailing list at Jo-Anns. You get coupons for 4- 50% off. You can sign up in the store and also by email for double coupons. http://www.joann.com/joann/ You need a good pair of scissors that are used for fabric only. You always know a home where a sew-er lives, because there's THAT pair of scissors nobody's allowed to use. .
  2. I'm hooked on Brother sewing machines. They start at around $100 and go up from there. I've owned several brands over the years, and found that Brothers are very reliable and the easiest to learn. My advice is to start with something simple, like a pillow case, tablecloth, or apron. Get to know your machine and how to cut fabric and sew a nice straight line. Once you're confident with that, look for patterns marked "easy". Simplicity makes a line called "It's so easy" for adult and kids clothing, and accssories like tote bags and purses, that are great for beginners. Here's a couple of good sites with tips for beginning sewers; http://sewing.about.com/od/beginner1/bb/sewing101.htm http://sewing.about.com/od/beginner1/Beginners.htm You can learn a LOT from those two sites.

  4. the number one tip I have for you is to buy your sewing machine from sewing machine store. You can get a good trade in model for lower price than a new. The major reason to buy it there is because you will get free lessons on how to use your machine. How to thread it and wind the bobbin, to make a button hole, use the zipper foot. Learning how to use a sewing machine can be very frustrating by yourself. Buying from a sewing machine store gives your a base to come back to when you have a problem. Bernia, Pfaff and Viking are all great machines. For a little lower end try White.
