Is there a good site that reviews sewing machines?
I want to buy a new/reconditioned sewing machine but am getting lost in the plethora of information about various makes, models etc etc. I found an American site where you can read users' reviews of different machines, which I found very helpful, but not all uk makes are represented. Any/all suggestions welcome.

- You'll just have to search each company of sewing machine you are willing to buy and see if that company has reviews. Which it most likely will.
- Patternreview.com is a user generated content site that has reviews of many different machines. You have to be a member to view all the reviews, but it's free and there are many UK members who might be able to help you with models specific to where you live. http://sewing.patternreview.com/
- I have a Janome, a Brother and a Babylock and love them all. It's just what works for you to some extent. If you can get to a show (I go to the one at the NEC, but it's also in London, Glasgow etc) they will demonstrate the machines and sometimes let you try them. They can be pushy though, so don't take the credit card! Have a chat on this forum. There is so many years of experience and it's great to be able to ask questions to real people or have them mention things you might not have thought of. www.thesewingforum.co.uk I would be worth stating if you were after a machine for dressmaking, quilting, embroidery etc. Hope this helps, and enjoy your machine whatever you decide on.
- It's ok going on to comparison sites and reading other peoples opinions but would you buy a car just on someone elses opinion? Ok, so you can get an idea of the machines functions and capabilities but think you would be better off having a look at the real thing. Would suggest you have a look in your local phone book or do a web search for a local company or shop that sell all makes of machine. Most of these places have machines set up and ready to demo. You also find that the staff in these places are actually sewers themselves so know what they are talking about. See if you can arrange to visit one of these places and have a go with the machines yourself. It might help also to make a list of things your new machine must be able to do and also additional features that you may like but arent essential. That should make comparing prices a little easier. Happy hunting. At the moment I have a Janome Embellisher, a Toyota Quiltmaster, a Brother Embroidery machine and a Brother all singing, all dancing but doesn't make the tea machine! But in the past have had some great Singer machines as well. I don't personally think the make is of primary importance more the machines capabilities.
