Which sewing machines offer better value for sewing machine models for sewing duck cloth?
I don't want a machine that will burn out after a week or two, but I don't want to spend a fortune either. Also, what type of features should I look for? The machine will be used to sew duck cloth exclusively.

- make a strip of the materials you will be using . visit a sewing machine store and ask for a demonstration with an inexpensive model. Sears sells The Kenmore machine which is very good and comes in several styles depending on what you want to make with it. I have a Bernina I inherited from my mom and it can sew through anything. The newer machines are all pretty good. Husquvarna and pfaff also are excellent. With sewing machines you must remember the old adage of you get what you pay for. Good luck with your quest!
- I would recommend a Juki TL98QE/FS. This may not be a brand you've heard of but they make industrial machines and this is a home version of an industrial model. It does only straight stitch and reverse but is a powerhorse. Brother makes one like this also which is almost exactly the same http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp10660-0101.html
- I agree with the first answer. Take the kind of fabric you want to several sewing machine stores and let them show you what they have that will do the job in your price range. Do not be afraid of a used machine. Do not go to the superstores for a machine- you will have no one to help you!! Good Luck!!
- Get an older machine with metal gears. This will probably be something made in the 50's or 60's. A very good machine for this is a Singer 401, 403, 500, 503 (the 401 and 500 have more built-in stitches, otherwise they are the same). You can probably get one in good shape with all the accessories for $100 or less. Have it cleaned and keep it well oiled and it will go on for a long time after today's plastic machines are in a landfill.
